I would more so consider them to be lifeforms from that plane, and that the Mind Flayers is a possessing entity that lives there too. I would also suggest that Demogorgon and their earlier forms are not exactly self aware and are basically animals. I do think that Hopper is in the upside down, though. It has characteristics and properties that aren’t clear to us, such as the electricity the Doe is utilizing in Season 2, and the Chicken I’m a bad influence but we’re gonna have a lot of fun shirt of the Demogorgon to move around with such ease. I also had a theory that things in the upside down manifest as they are discovered in our world, which sounds kind of nonsensical.
